Portuguese Liga: S.L. Benfica Extends Winning Streak, Defeats C.D. Santa Clara

Benfica Continues Impressive Form, Secures Hard-Fought Victory

S.L. Benfica maintained their remarkable winning streak in the Liga Portugal on Saturday, overcoming a resilient C.D. Santa Clara side 2-1 at the Estádio de São Miguel. The win extends Benfica's unbeaten run in the league to eight matches, solidifying their position at the top of the standings.

Grimaldo and Musa on Target for Benfica

Álex Grimaldo opened the scoring for Benfica in the 25th minute with a well-taken free-kick. The Spanish left-back curled a superb effort into the top corner, leaving Santa Clara goalkeeper Marco Pereira with no chance. Benfica doubled their lead just before halftime when Nemanja Radonjić's cross found Umaro Embalo, who unselfishly squared the ball for Musa to tap into an empty net.

Santa Clara's Fightback Falls Short

Santa Clara showed great determination in the second half and pulled a goal back through Lincoln in the 65th minute. The Brazilian forward capitalized on a defensive error by Benfica to reduce the deficit. However, despite a late push, Santa Clara were unable to find an equalizer, as Benfica held on to secure the three points.

Benfica's Title Hopes Bolstered

The victory strengthens Benfica's grip on the Liga Portugal title race. With eight wins and two draws in their opening ten matches, Benfica now hold a four-point lead over second-placed FC Porto. Santa Clara, on the other hand, remain in 10th place with 12 points from ten games.

What's Next for Both Teams?

Benfica will face a stern test next weekend when they travel to the Estádio do Dragão to face Porto in a highly anticipated clash between the league's top two teams. Santa Clara, meanwhile, will host Estoril Praia at the Estádio de São Miguel.
